Float Pedaling

Legend says it was used by the great French rider Jacques Anquetil half a century ago as he won 5 Tours de France and was cycling's best time trialist. During long stretches of steady pedaling, let your right leg come around without applying force, just for one stroke. Four strokes later, do the same with your left leg. Then repeat with the right leg 4 strokes after that, and so on.
Letting your legs "float" this way gives them momentary relief from muscle tension to help them feel fresher longer. Here's the best part: This benefit comes without any loss of speed. Practice float pedaling this winter and it might become natural enough to use on the road next season.
